Committed to Diversity

Students at Mark Murray working on Zentangle Turkeys for Thanksgiving
As an art teacher I feel that being committed to diversity in my classroom is paramount. The art room is the perfect place for students to explore the world around them, new ideas, and themselves. As they gather knowledge of these big concepts they become more well-rounded and educated individuals who are prepared for the world outside of school.
When we teach students about a culture vastly different from their own, we are not making a political stance or trying to get them to change their own culture. We are showing them that there are beautiful differences between our way of life and the rest of the world. Most importantly we are teaching them that these differences are nothing to be afraid of and should be respected. This ideal is key in creating citizens who will be a powerful positive influence in the world.
Having lessons that get students to think about the differences we see in each other is also very important to me. School is filled with moments where students make judgements about one another with out really knowing or understanding that person. These perceptions and judgements can lead to an array of behavioral issues. In the art room we can combat this behavior by creating and sharing artwork that is reflective and embraces the diversity within the classroom. By giving students an opportunity to share their own story and hear the stories of others we are building community and also building understanding. This understanding that all people have their struggles, their triumphs and things that we can relate to builds students and future citizens that are compassionate and kind to others.
Committing to diversity as a teacher is my way of committing to trying to show our students ways to be responsible, caring and respectful individuals. As adults who are responsible for educating young developing minds, taking care of these minds for the greater part of each day, it is part of our job to educate them in this way. It is our responsibility as teachers to show them that the world is a big and diverse place. It is my goal to teach them that these differences are beautiful and should be treasured.
